Everything important in life is achieved with other people. The fundamental concept of being part of something bigger than yourself is one of the greatest life lessons that can be learned from youth sports. For many young men, this can be the foundation for leadership.
In select, travel baseball and college prep baseball, this concept seems to be harder and harder to find. Players are so caught up in the own success and future that they forget the best path to success is as a TEAM.
There are 3 basic fundamentals to becoming a team
1.Friendship
2.Loyalty
3.Cooperation
When friendship exists the strength of the team is increased. Having respect for your teammates and having camaraderie fuels a trusting friendship.
Loyalty is doing unto others as you would have them do unto you! It’s a two way street—–you must give it to receive it.
Ex. 1) Being accountable to your team by being on time, doing the work, being in the trenches together. You gain a respect and appreciation for one another because of what you have gone through together.
Ex. 2) Not showing up your teammates or organization by talking them down.
Cooperation Individually each finger on your hand is weak. Together they form a strong, forceful object. Doing the little things such as sacrifice bunt, taking the extra base, backing up bases, forms a trust and builds a team concerned with doing things the right way.
Quote—A team is only as strong as the sum of its parts.
